Strait of Hormuz Reopens for Trade as US-Iran Signals Offer Mixed Messages

Abbas Araghchi and Donald Trump have both indicated that the vital shipping route, the Strait of Hormuz, is now accessible to commercial vessels.

Speaking after a newly implemented ceasefire linked to tensions between Israel and Lebanon, Araghchi confirmed that the waterway is “fully open,” raising hopes for stability in global oil transport.

At the same time, Trump echoed the development on social media, suggesting that Iran has assured it will not shut down the strait again. However, he emphasized that US naval restrictions targeting Iranian ports are still active and will remain until broader agreements are finalized.

Meanwhile, European powers including France and the United Kingdom convened a major international meeting in Paris. Representatives from around 40 nations discussed coordinated efforts to safeguard maritime navigation in the region once hostilities fully subside.

The Strait of Hormuz plays a critical role in global energy supply, carrying nearly 20% of the world’s oil shipments daily. Recent disruptions had already triggered a sharp rise in fuel prices worldwide, making its reopening a significant development for international markets.

Global leaders have responded with cautious optimism, noting the positive step while remaining alert to conflicting signals from both Washington and Tehran regarding military and economic measures.post by aljajeera
